How I Became a Conservative


I grew up in a middle-class Jewish (but not religious) family where most everyone was - surprise - a Democrat, and voted Democratic. As I was growing up and into my teens and early 20's nobody really talked much about politics.

It was basically, XYZ president or politician promised me this, and and I like him/her and I'm going to vote for him. Little if any critical independent thinking was devoted to "how" Mr. XYZ intended to PAY for whatever he promised.

In my 20's I decided I needed to broaden my horizons, and traveled to Israel to live on a Kibbutz for about a year. I had a great time. I also worked hard (you HAVE to work on a kibbutz, period!). But I also learned that the kibbutz mentality is very socialistic, and not quite as capitalistic as many may think. I also learned a lot about the Jewish culture, morality, and history and how Christians and Jews are "joined at the hip". After all, Jesus Christ was born - and lived - a Jew. So were most of his Apostles. I also traveled extensively through Europe.

Upon my return to the US, working various jobs, completing college and eventually earning a Ph.D. in economics, I did a lot more studying. I read Mortimer Adler, I read Milton Friedman, I watched Wm. F. Buckley. And eventually I found the basic truism that drives the conservative philosophy: You become a conservative when you've earned something to CONSERVE. LIberals simply do not understand this basic fact - yet it remains the very cornerstone on which our great country was founded.

Since then, I've been involved in local GOP organizations such as the Orlando Young Republicans and have supported Tea Party candidates as well. The Tea Party is anathema to liberals! Why? Because they believe in smaller government and less taxes! That's "evil"?
So, I'm a proud Conservative with libertarian leanings. I'm also a political realist, and I just voted for Mitt Romney here in Florida. By realist, I mean that Romney's not perfect. But when you compare him to president Obama and the complete shambles he's made as Commander in Chief, I'll hold my nose and take Romney any day!

    Love your "UnBlog". I think Romney will surprise you with how much closer to Reagan he will be than any Republican president since then.

FIREFOX / IE Word-Wrap, Word-Break, TABLES FIX

One of the most annoying things a developer (who would normally delight in writing code, not futzing with markup) can have is getting rendering issues between different browsers. The two biggest players are of course Internet Exploder and Firefart (as I lovingly like to refer to each). In most cases that's going to take care of 98 percent of your total site traffic. IE has had a proprietary "word-break" style attribute for a long time, and this made it into the CSS 3.0 spec. But that doesn't necessarily help you with Firefox right now. Some observations on Script Callbacks, "AJAX", "ATLAS" "AHAB" and where it's all going.

I've taken a more than cursory interest in the whole Remote Scripting (.NET species) vs. AJAX and now ATLAS discussion, mostly because I started using Remote Scripting since Microsoft first released it, and because I continued to refine it after seeing Brent Ashley's excellent work with JSRS, which was one of the first "real" cross-browser solutions back in 2000 (that's the turn of the Century for you history buffs). Now Bertrand Leroy, a Microsoft guy whose work I like , has authored some very interesting ASP.NET 2.0 script callback stuff that he points to on his blog, and he is obviously (at least, to me he is) involved quite heavily in the development of this new ATLAS infrastructure that they'll preview at PDC. IE7 - Vista: "Internet Explorer has stopped Working"

This one was a bitch. All of a sudden for no reason at all, out of the blue, I get this dialog "internet Explorer has stopped working". I didn't install any new software, crap- I didn't do anything! So here I am using FIREFART to go on the internet and find out what to do! Damn! Good thing I've got the sucker on the same machine (I'm not "anti-Firefox", i just don't use it that much except to check my page renderings). The Fix The fix (at least for me): 1) Go into Control Panel, and choose "Internet Options". 2) Under the "Advanced" tab, press the "RESET" button at the lower right: Don't ask me why this happens, or why the fix works. That's a BUG, D00D - I don't care how you slice it!
